Day 10

Today we got up around 6:30 ish because we needed to make our lunch so we could get on the road before 7:30. We went to the DNR building in Wellpinit because we had people that were giving us a tour of the building. Our friend Warren asked his boss if he wanted to talk us about what he does as the DNR director. Warrens’ bosses name Is B.J Kieffer. B.J has 2 problems to deal with as he works with the DNR. The 1st problem is an open pit that used to be a Uranium mine. The 2nd problem is the fact that the fish can’t travel back up the river, but the damns prevent them from traveling to the upper parts of the river. B.J Has had many of the elders come to him and ask him for their fish to come back. B.J went to school to become a teacher, but he changed his mind and went into forestry. He went to SFCC and got an AA. He went to UI and got a bachelors. We went over to the DNR fire and they talked about how more jobs are opening up here for jobs. We met with Vernon L. Stearns JR because he had a power point to show us what he does in his job. He works as the fuels manager for the DNR fire building. He also works with other tribes and other counties. His team also does a lot of prescribe burns because they didn’t want a big fire that would burn hot and with high intensity. We went and checked out places with George and he told us what they are doing with an overcrowded bunch of tress.
